FROM Bulldog to Pipex to Tiscali – it’s impossible to keep up! Pipex is putting a lid on all new customers as of April 1st, and shuffling any existing ones to Tiscali following another recent takeover.
For many Pipex customers, this is going to seem like a terribly unfunny April Fool’s joke, but unfortunately this isn’t the case.
If you’re one of the unhappy ones thinking of jumping ship, then what are your alternatives?
Instead of planning your April Fool’s revenge, put away your whoopee cushions, hide your itching powder somewhere safe (preferably not in your underwear drawer), and consider where you might want to go next.
If you were with Pipex for...speed
Pipex has a fairly decent 8Mb download speed on all of its packages.
Luckily for you, there are hoards of other broadband providers that also offer the same kind of deal.
Virgin Media’s Broadband and Talk Bundle 1, for example, also offers 8Mb (with some customers getting up to 10Mb...bargain!).
What’s even better than this, is that instead of the, frankly, paltry download limits of 2Gb that Pipex slap on you, Virgin Media has an unlimited download allowance (subject to their fair usage policy), so while your iTunes account might get a hammering, you won’t get any kind of fine for going over your limit.
Wait! That’s not it... with Virgin Media you get anytime free calls to UK landlines, unlike Pipex who only offer free calls on an evening and a weekend.
Even if all your mates are at work during the day, call them anyway. It’s free!
Breaking news! We've also just learned that from June 2008, support calls to Virgin Media will be free, as opposed to the current 25p per minute.
If you were with Pipex for...price
Pipex’s £9.99 a month offer is admittedly quite decent, especially for the speed you get.
If you’re looking for something similar, then why not go one step further and get yourself signed up for TalkTalk’s ‘free’ broadband service?
Not ‘free’ as such, but at £5.89 a month (plus your BT phone line rental) for 8Mb broadband, you’ll be saving a whole £4.10, which could get you an extra couple of pints, or you could save it so you’ll be able to afford a litre of petrol in 2 years time.
If you were with Pipex for...customer service
Pipex are highly rated for their good customer service, mostly because of their local rate, UK based call centres.
Well we’ve got some delicious news for all you Pipex exiles – you don’t actually need to pay anything at all. From April 1st (seems this is a prime calendar date for broadband providers), BT are providing totally free customer service, which is pretty decent of them indeed.
What’s that? More lovely freebies? Oh yes. With all BT Total packages, you get 250 free BT openzone wi-fi minutes per month, so whether you’re a hectic on-the-go jetsetter who spends half their life in airports, or you want to sit in Starbucks and pretend you’re writing a novel when you’re actually just watching Duran Duran videos on YouTube, then BT Total is for you.
If you were with Pipex for...added extras
Sometimes it’s those little touches that make all the difference.
Pipex offers a free modem, or month’s broadband if you already have a router, a year’s free anti-virus software and firewall, and 50MB of webspace.
Believe it or not, when they’re not selling stamps, losing your mail or running adverts with the most obscure range of celebrities, the Post Office now offers broadband too.
Right now they’re offering free setup when you order online. On top of this you get a free modem, free anti-virus software and firewall, 50MB of webspace and 5 e-mail addresses.
You can also nominate the telephone numbers of ‘Loved Ones’, and get a free 60 minute phone call on birthdays and Christmas Day. Aww. Can you feel the love? We certainly can.
