Can I keep my broadband and switch to Primus line rental?

neil hawkins

I have a BT landline with Plusnet broadband. If I switch to Primus line rental will the Plusnet broadband still work?

Switching your home phone from BT to Primus won't prevent you from receiving Plusnet Value package, as long as you are on a standard BT line rental deal.

Primus provides line rental packages using BT-owned lines so switching should be relatively trouble-free.

Where do troubles start?

Switchers with providers such as TalkTalk or Sky, who use local loop unbundling (LLU) - a process whereby their own equipment is installed in BT exchanges - to take ownership of phone lines, would have a more difficult and expensive time switching to Primus as, effectively, these types of value providers disconnect your BT line to connect you to their services.

If you were on a package whereby you took your home phone as well as broadband from an LLU provider - TalkTalk, for example - then it might have been trickier to switch as you would need a BT line back again and could, therefore, have to pay BT a charge to reconnect the line.

If you can remember the awful 'Come Back to BT' adverts, it's a bit like that, except with less Bob Hoskins.

Luckily, Primus waive this fee so whoever your broadband provider is not only is it possible to move line rental it's also free.

Primus line rental plus broadband

Remember, though, that once with Primus you will be locked into an 18 month rolling contract so consider this carefully before switching.

Also note that some of the cheapest deals available are with LLU providers who require you to take both landline and broadband connection to get the best price.

But, in this scenario, as long as you are not in contract with BT then there shouldn't be any charges to pay to leave them and there isn't a charge to join Primus.
