IT'S already turning into a happy new year for Virgin Media customers as the company promises less chance of bandwidth throttling in 2008.
Throttling – the practice of decreasing broadband bandwidth for a minority of users at peak times to speed up broadband access for other users – currently affects the top five percent of Virgin’s heaviest uploaders and downloaders.
3% of users affected
Under the new rules it will affect just three percent.
This should mean that fewer Virgin Media broadband connections are throttled overall and should make the service much faster at peak times for the majority of Virgin Media users.
Will Virgin Media's throttling affect me?
Only the heaviest users should worry about throttling.
However, it’s worth checking out if that’s you since once the throttle is in place your service will be affected for about five hours.
Even with a throttle in place Virgin Media are quick to point out that the download limits you signed up for won’t be affected.
25,000 music files a day
Virgin Media Broadband M, L and XL customers will still be able to download around 2,500, 5,500 and 25,000 music files respectively every day.
Remember that the total amount of data you can safely download each month will be governed by the Virgin Media broadband package you've chosen, and keep an eye on your usage between 4pm and 9pm (rather than between 4pm and midnight as is currently the case.)
