Be Broadband versus O2 Broadband: Which is better?
Be and O2 are offering the best new broadband packages around. But with just a gnat’s hairs width between them how do you know who will give you the best deal? Julie Kukiewicz puts them in the ring together and dings the bell!

O2 Price drop for non-O2 customers
AS part of its continued drive for new customers, O2 Broadband has slashed the price of all its broadband packages by £5 per month for non-O2 mobile customers signing up before 30th April 2008.

O2 for iPhone and Broadband?
FOR many customers, the decision to snap up one of the hot new iPhone handsets might have gone without saying. But how many of the newly subscribed O2 network customers have considered switching their broadband provider to O2 too?

O2 Broadband one month on: Is it any good?
IS O2 broadband any good? We speak to O2 broadband customers to uncover what they think of the UK's best deal for high-speed broadband.

IF you blinked you would have missed it, but modest mobile provider O2 has quietly launched some of the most impressive broadband packages currently available, especially if you are an O2 mobile customer.

While not strictly for O2 customers only, O2’s broadband packages are clearly designed with one thing in mind: to give O2 mobile customers such a good broadband deal that they wouldn’t dream of shifting their allegiance to another mobile provider.

£10 per month less

The biggest clue that the O2 broadband packages are aimed squarely at their legion of mobile users is the £10 per month rebate on the already reasonable monthly fees for all existing or new O2 mobile customers.

This rebate makes the O2 broadband packages without a doubt the best value high-speed broadband on the market today.

Reliable

What’s more, the packages are proving themselves to be reliable, well-supported and packed with useful features and extras.

“O2 traditionally undersell themselves then go on to over-deliver,” says Lyndsey Burton of broadband comparison site ChooseISP.co.uk.

“With their new broadband packages they are exemplifying that ethos. Even if you discount the incredibly low prices that O2 customers get, the O2 broadband packages themselves are so full of useful extra’s and are all backed up with free, UK based customer support.”

O2 broadband’s three packages; O2 Broadband Standard, O2 Broadband Premium and O2 Broadband Ultimate boast speeds of up to 8Mbps, 16Mbps and 20Mbps respectively.

Unlimited downloads

All O2 broadband packages offer unlimited downloads and include a free O2 Wireless Box which is equivalent to a wireless router. The packages also all include free McAfee security.

The O2 broadband packages are built alongside the existing Be network, which O2 bought in 2006.

Be continues to operate as a standalone broadband provider and having recently dropped its prices drastically to make way for the new O2 packages remains perhaps better value for non-O2 customers looking for high-speed broadband.

Some common questions about O2 Broadband:

Is O2 broadband only for O2 mobile customers?

No, anyone can sign up for the O2 broadband packages. However, non-O2 customers will pay £10 per month more than O2 mobile customers, and certain extra’s such as O2’s brilliant Email-to-phone facility where your emails can be sent directly to your phone and received like text messages will not be available. While the O2 broadband packages are still excellent value even for non-O2 mobile customers, we’d suggest that the equivalent packages from Be (owned by O2) may offer slightly better value.

Why does Be offer 24Mb and O2 offer 20Mb, yet they are using the same network?

While 24Mb speeds are theoretically possible, O2 are aware that reaching that speed is practically impossible, so instead have listed their max speed at an easily attainable 20Mbps. This is a classic of case of O2 not promising more than it can safely deliver. We hope the other broadband providers are taking note!

Can I get the low O2 broadband prices if I am an O2 pay as you go customer?

Unfortunately not. You will have to be a pay monthly O2 mobile customer to benefit from the extremely favourable O2 broadband prices. If it was as easy as picking up an O2 sim card and making a few calls a month, the whole of the UK would be around this package like midges to a red-head!

Which is better: O2 broadband or Be broadband?

Be broadband is owned by O2, but the two brands exist as separate broadband providers offering similar products.

There is no doubt whatsoever that O2 is a better option if you happen to be an O2 customer. In fact if you are thinking of switching mobile providers anytime soon, we’d have to say that switching to O2 would be worth it just for the broadband deal you’ll get with it.

The Be broadband packages are marginally better value for money for non-O2 customers, but we’ll have to wait and see whether customer support for Be can match the excellent, free UK-based customer support offered to O2 broadband customers.

Another plus point for O2 Broadband over Be Broadband, albeit temporary, is that O2 broadband is currently offering a 100 day money back guarantee as well as waiving the activation fee.
