CABLE broadband provider Virgin Media has announced plans to upgrade their 'L' tier broadband customers from a 4Mbps connection speed to an ADSL-bashing 10Mbps.
And if that wasn’t good enough, the faster speeds will be given to customers free of charge!
When Will I Get My Upgrade?
The Virgin Media free speed upgrades will be dolled out by regions, starting in a few weeks time.
All upgrades from 4Mb to 10Mb should be completed by the end of the summer.
This will see all Virgin Media customers laughing at their neighbours who opted for ADSL broadband offered by other broadband providers.
They would only reach speeds of 8Mbps if they lived on top of their telephone exchange, and that’s only if nobody else was using the internet at the time!
Speeds of 50Mb are currently available for Virgin Media customers in Ashford, Folkstone and Dover.
What Will I Get?
Upgraded Virgin Media customers will get more than double the speed of their previous cable broadband packages.
Customers with Virgin Media’s new 10Mb service will be able to download a typical Beatles’ track in just four seconds and the whole Abbey Road album in under a minute.
An episode of Prison Break will take under five minutes to go from the internet to your desktop.
What Have Virgin Media Got To Say About This?
Neil Berkett, acting CEO of Virgin Media said: “Virgin Media's cable network gives us a natural superiority over other broadband services and we're delighted to reward our customers with this free upgrade.
“We've barely scratched the surface of what's possible with our cable network, and we will continue to look for new ways to satisfy the growing demand for even faster broadband in the UK.
“We're proud to be leading the country's superfast broadband revolution."
What’s Next?
Following trials in Kent, Virgin Media will also be expanding its upgrade programme to a whopping 50Mb.
With current top speeds of 20Mb, by the end of 2008, nine million homes in the UK will be able to upgrade to the 50Mb Virgin Media cable broadband service.
