Virgin Media offers free support but hikes other prices In a classic case of giving with one hand but taking away with the other, Virgin Media has finally started offering free technical support to its customers, but at the same time quietly upped some prices, reports Bruce Stevens.

Have the big bods at Virgin Media gone mental? You’d be forgiven for thinking so looking at their so-special-you’d-think-they’d-gone-mental special offers that were unveiled this week.

Before you get a headache from the anticipation, we can reveal a run-down of Virgin Media’s limited-time only delights.

3 for £9 a month

Yes, you heard. Virgin Media is offering their Medium 2MB Broadband and TV packages, plus Large telephone service for £9 a month when you take out the Virgin Phone service for £11 a month.

Though the cynical may bemoan the £11 a month phone charge as the catch in the deal, it’s worth remembering that BT line rental – which you’d have to pay with all non-cable broadband packages - is £11.75 per month.

That’s just £20 a month, for the first 6 months, and £23.45 a month thereafter.

Included in this price you get a commendably speedy 2MB broadband with no download limits, a TV service which includes free catch-up, and a phone package that gives you unlimited free evening and weekend calls to UK landlines.

3 for £16 a month

Desperate for a little bit extra? With Virgin Media’s 3 for £16 a month deal, you get a faster 4MB broadband connection (which will increase to 10MB at some point over the summer months) and a free wireless router to boot.

Again, you’ll need to take the Virgin phone at £11 a month, and on top of the broadband deal you get the Medium TV package, and the Medium phone service, which boasts free weekend calls to UK landlines.

That’s £27 a month in total for the 3 services.

These prices stand for the length of the 12-month contract too, so there are no nasty price-changing surprises lurking in the shadows.

2Mb Broadband for £9

This deal is pretty much what it says on the virtual tin.

You get their Medium 2Mb broadband package with unlimited downloads for just £9 a month for the first 12 months, then £17 after that.

As it’s cable broadband, you don’t even need a phone line, so mentally knock £11.75 off the price!

This replaces Virgin Media’s £10 a month for the first 6 months deal, and also makes it their cheapest standalone broadband ever! Get it while it’s hot, folks!

Go Extra Large for £49 a month

This one is for those who have everything, but still want more.

Get all 3 Extra Large packages for just £49 a month for the first 6 months, and £56 a month thereafter – a whopping reduction from their triple XL VIP package at £85 a month.

This one isn’t for the faint-hearted – within the price you get lightning-fast 20Mb broadband with unlimited downloads and free wireless router, over 145 TV channels for you to forge your career as a couch potato with, and unlimited calls for the first hour to UK landlines at any time.

If you’re a serial chatter, you can just hang up after 59 minutes and re-dial to avoid call charges.

That’s a point. What about call charges?

If you’re apprehensive about expensive call charges outside of the unlimited allowance, during the daytime (6am-6pm), Virgin Media equal BT call prices at 4p per minute.

Evening calls (unless inclusive in your package) with Virgin Media are 3.25p per minute, compared to BT at 1.5p per minute.

Anything else to know?

All Virgin Media packages will be subject to a £30 installation fee, but considering the money you’ll save in the long run, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

You’ll be able to take advantage of Virgin Media’s recently re-vamped free technical support (from a Virgin home phone), should anything go wrong with your service during your contract time.

All Virgin Media packages come with anti-virus software and a firewall to keep out cyber-bugs and various other nasties you don’t want on your PC.

Don’t forget that these packages are for a limited time – we suspect they won’t last longer than the end of June - so grab them while you can!
