Sky Sports: get it Cheaper
CommentsEARLIER this year it became possible to get Sky sports without Sky for the first time.
It wasn't exactly a magnanimous decision on Sky's part - Ofcom had to force their hand and they've been slinging mud ever since - but at least sports fans have a reason to cheer.
Or do they: is Sky Sports cheaper?
Well, it is sometimes. Unfortunately, the different deals are confusing.
BT are streets ahead when it comes to sports with basic broadband and calls and this is now the best way to get Sky Sports cheapest.
Sky and Top-up TV are still cheapest for Sky Sports alone, though, and when you're looking to get Sky Sports with really great broadband Sky and Virgin Media win again.
Just Sky Sports (no broadband)

If you've got sporting tunnel vision these are three ways to get Sky Sports cheapest (channels 1 + 2) and with a bare minimum of anything else.
Note that with Sky and Virgin you get extra channels with your Sky Sports 1 + 2 but you will be tied into a contract.
With Top-up TV you'll only get Freeview and you'll pay for set-up (£39.99 box plus £20 connection fee).

Bundling Sky Sports with phone and broadband is often much more cost effective than the options above and it's the only way to get Sky Sports on BT Vision.
The prices listed above are for basic broadband and phone. That's up to 10Mb and unlimited downloads with Virgin Media, up to 20Mb speeds but a 2GB download limit at Sky and - in the middle - up to 20Mb speeds and a 10GB download limit at BT.
They all offer inclusive Evening & Weekend calls and Anytime in BT's case.
All the deals listed above are for Sky Sports 1 + 2 (and 3 + 4 in Virgin's case) with the cheapest broadband but what happens if you want better internet?

Here are the prices for upgraded broadband, evening and weekend calls and basic TV with Sky Sports. Before all this TV business got so hard to ignore we were a broadband comparison site, after all.
In Sky's case the upgrade is their unlimited broadband deal: up to 20Mb speeds and truly unlimited downloads.
For Virgin Media we upgraded to broadband XL: that's up to 20Mb cable broadband speeds (recently shown to be actually very speedy) with unlimited usage.
BT we upgraded to option 3 - up to 20Mb and unlimited usage. Note that this isn't available with evening and weekend calls as a bundle so the price listed is for signing up to option 3 and then adding BT Vision with Sky Sports as an existing BT customer.
