Be broadband review: Unlimited

BE has a very liberal approach to downloading, which makes Be Unlimited ideal for heavy users concerned about throttling or extra charges levied by other providers such as Virgin Media.

This is without doubt, one of the best 'fast broadband' packages available in the UK today.

Offering life-changing speeds of up to 24Mb with a price tag that compares to packages more than ten times slower, Be Unlimited broadband is the cream of the crop for fast and unlimited broadband.

Be's additional bonus feature is the optional 3-month rolling contract. This is a rare example of high quality broadband and flexibility coinciding and you'll have to pay a little more to take advantage of it.

That detail aside, however, the two Be Unlimited packages are the same.

Speeds above 20Mb

Be Broadband certainly seem to have ironed out many of the problems that plagued the Be service in the early days and users are now reporting an excellent standard of service and speeds that do indeed reach above 20Mb.

Be Broadband has even been nominated 2 years running at the ISPA awards (the broadband Oscars).

More importantly, online forums and spleen-venting sites are consistently low on bad reviews for the Be Broadband service, which speaks volumes for Be and the niche it has cut out for itself as not only the fastest broadband provider in the UK, but certainly one of the best broadband providers too - especially in terms of quality of service and the levels of customer care offered.

They'll have to keep their nose to the grindstone if they want to maintain this reputation though as more and more providers start offering up to 24Mb broadband connections and even higher speeds.

Much lower prices

If your area supports Be's services, you would be foolish not to give 24Mb broadband a try - especially at the now reduced price.

Be have a great reputation for customer service, exemplified in their partnership with on-site IT support company Geeks-on-Wheels: Be customers get 15% off their services.

With such a relaxed attitude to downloading, and with such a high reputation of customer service combined with this price, it really is a no-brainer. It baffles us why everybody within Be Broadband's reach is not using their service!

Be Unlimited is a great choice for online gamers, but if you want the best of the best, you should consider the only marginally more expensive Be Pro which also offers 24Mb speeds but boasts upload speeds of 2.5Mb, rather than Be Unlimited's 1.3Mb upload speeds.

That said, the 1.3Mb upload speeds make Be Unlimited more than adequate for online gamers, business users and VoIP telephone natterers.

On the subject of gaming broadband, Be is cementing its position as the best broadband provider for online gaming with its ever growing accolades and new 'BeGamer.co.uk' service, a dedicated gaming portal no less!

With or without ties?

Be Unlimited now comes with the option of a cheaper 12-month contract, or a more expensive 3-month rolling contract.

Those extra expenses stack up, too, with £2.50 extra on your monthly price plus a £24 connection fee. You'll also be excluded from the current Amazon voucher offer.

Suffice to say, it's probably advisable to opt for the 12-month tie-in unless you know you're going to leave before then, otherwise you risk spending an extra £54 over the year.

Also, keep in mind, if you do go "contract-less" the 3-month contract is a rolling one - so when the first 3 months is up you still need to give 3 month's notice to cancel without charge. Alternatively, you can rush it through with the £40 express cancellation service that only requires 10 day's notice.

Finally, don't forget that if you do leave Be you will need to return the Be Box - or face a £50 charge! (Don't worry too much though, they will accept proof of postage).

"Service ok, no complains, but for terminating a contract they need 3 MONTHS notice!!! (I was BE unlimited customer) or they charge 40 pounds(!) for express cancelation."

Simon from Tunbridge Wells writes... 19/04/2008

"Customer service is almost as bad as Tiscali! but once its up and running its fast (20% faster than pipex on the same kit) and reliable IMO the only real choice atm"

Adam from Reading writes... 23/11/2007

"Details opposite say no firewall. This is wrong. The Be Box (supplied with the Be connection) contains a hardware firewall which is a major win over the software firewalls provided by other vendors as it will protect the entire network not just the nasty windows machines. Be broadband is great :-)"

Bryan Christian from Halifax writes... 10/10/2007

"I use Be broadband for online gaming and I can tell you the extra speed makes SUCH a difference, especially the faster upload speeds. If you are a gamer I would think seriously about getting Be. Otherwise you'll just land up getting beaten by all those Korean guys who have like 100MB broadband!"
