BT broadband review: Infinity

IT certainly sounds like the future but was BT Infinity worth the wait?

Super-fast Broadband

BT have just become the UK's second ISP to offer super-fast broadband on a large scale.

Like Virgin Media BT Infinity broadband is offering a FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) service which means that copper cables will still cover the distance from the street to your home.

Even so, BT estimate speeds of 'up to' 40Mb - a full 10Mb less than Virgin XXL broadband.

This has more to do with pragmatism than capacity, however: 40Mb is a more realistic broadband speed than 50Mb, even with fibre.

A major plus for BT Infinity over Virgin, though, is that they're offering the UK's fastest upload speeds (2Mb with the 40GB download limit or 10Mb with unlimited downloads).

If you often upload information online then that's a difference you'll certainly notice.

Choice of Download Limits

BT Infinity has a choice of download limits: 40GB with Option One and Unlimited with Option Two.

Super-fast broadband is perfect for downloading music, email attachments and other files and streaming content so we're not sure why you'd go for the smaller download limit - which is the broadband equivalent of taking a thimble to Oktoberfest.

Having said that, 40GB a month will be enough for watching about 12 hours of video online per month (assuming you don't do much of anything else) so if you want to make those 12 hours count Option One will be fine.

For an extra £5 a month, though, we'd be inclined to take full advantage of BT infinity's super-fast speeds (especially since the cheaper deal has a £50 connection fee).

Another way to partially avoid this up-front cost is to go for the broadband + calls deal which only has a £25 installation fee.

Either way, bear in mind that you'll be subject to BT's fair-use policy which could lead to your broadband being slowed down at peak times or when you're in the 2% of downloaders in your area.

Virgin XXL broadband isn't currently subject to a fair-use policy.

Is BT Infinity Any Good?

In all, BT infinity broadband is super-fast from the big daddy of broadband: that means 24/7 telephone support and optional extras like TV and online storage.

The prices are excellent too - both deals are cheaper than Virgin XXL and highly competitive when compared against other fast broadband deals.
