Demon broadband review: Home Broadband

IF internet years are anything like dog years, broadband provider Demon must be the grey-haired pedigree with swollen knees by now.

OK, maybe not the swollen knees - Demon broadband is pleasingly quick and very reliable - but the grey-haired pedigree bit is not a bad thing in a business where experience rather than blanket-marketing on bus stops and billboards is what really counts.

Good and simple

Experience has no doubt taught Demon to keep things good and simple: which is exactly what you get with the Demon Home broadband deals.

There are two offers available - Home 8000 (up to 8Mb) and Home 2+ (up to 20Mb) with a decent 50GB monthly usage allowance.

Note that the Demon site no longer prominently advertises a 50GB limit but scour their 'fair use' policy and you'll see that's what's being offered here. Going over 50GB will result in a dropped connection.

If you scroll down to the prices at the bottom of the page the eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that the slower 8Mb broadband deal is actually more expensive than 20Mb.

That's because the 8Mb service is provided almost everywhere through BT wholesale broadband but the 20Mb service is provided only at LLU (unbundled) exchanges. Since unbundled exchanges are more competitive they tend to be cheaper.

Phonecalls over the internet

Demon has also just introduced its answer to Skype, called 'Voice over Broadband' which allows you to use your Demon broadband connection to make phonecalls at a cheaper rate than your current call provider.

Calls to other Demon 'Voice over Broadband' users are free, while calls to other numbers start at 1p per minute.

You can pay for the calls on a Pay as You Go basis, or if you want free inclusive UK or international calls, you can pay a monthly fee for the privelege.

Comprehensive email security

The Demon Home 2+ package also boasts Demon's excellent customer support as well as a very comprehensive email security suite that includes anti-phishing, anti-spam and anti-virus filters.

This Demon home broadband may not be the cheapest or flashest broadband package on the market, but it is very decently priced, full of value and safe-as-houses.

There's clearly life in this old dog we call Demon!.
