3 mobile broadband review: Free Samsung N130 Netbook + Mobile

The Samsung N130 netbook isn't exactly a 'free' laptop but it is a very good deal, and an extremely portable one at that - even the DVD drive can be left at home!

The Free Samsung N130 Netbook Reviewed

For portability - which, if you're going to use your mobile broadband, is really a necessity - you can't beat a netbook.

The Samsung N130 netbook has a 10" screen and weighs just 1.25kg. Of course, the pay off for portability is fiddly-ness and a lack of memory.

The other downside of the Samsung N130 is its lack of internal DVD drive. However, 3 mobile broadband have chucked in an external one with this deal so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

With a fair-sized keyboard as well as 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM, however, the N130 does better than most.

It also gets two thumbs up from us for having a battery life which beats many beefier netbooks and laptops - it'll run for around 6 hours with light usage, enough for even the most daunting commute.

All in all, the Samsung N130 is an excellent budget netbook.

You'll also be able to get Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007 with an upgrade in 2010 at a discounted price when you sign up (£59.99 - formally £110) which is nice extra if not exactly a red-hot offer.

MS 2007 is available for a few pounds more in many other places and Microsoft are offering the upgrade to everyone.

What's 3's Mobile Broadband Like?

3 were the first to bring a 3G network in the UK and now they've teamed up with T-mobile to offer excellent coverage across 90% (soon 98%) of the UK. You can currently check if you're likely to get a strong service on their coverage checker on the 3 website.

With speeds of just around 3.6Mb 3 offers an average service speed for mobile broadband.

Is it a good deal?

We found the Samsung N130 netbook on sale at Amazon for around £230, you can get 3's 5GB broadband deal for £15 a month and the external DVD drive retails at around £35.

That comes to £535 altogether, just £5 less than the total cost of this mobile broadband deal.

Since price-wise there's very little difference between the two options, this free Samsung N130 netbook deal is a great way to spread the cost of a laptop, external DVD drive and a good mobile broadband deal without overspending. Not to mention, it's a lot less effort than buying three separate products.
