Virgin Media mobile broadband review: Pay Monthly

THEY may have joined the mobile broadband party a little late in the day, but it's served them well and Virgin Media have burst onto the scene with a select few mobile broadband packages.

Usage Allowances

The Virgin Media Mobile Broadband package offers a very respectable 3GB usage limit or a lighter 1GB.

You should generally expect to pay around £5 per GB with mobile broadband so £10 for 1GB isn't ideal, though it isn't too much more than the cheapest 3 mobile broadband pay monthly deal (£7.50 a month) or the O2 mobile broadband pay monthly deal (£10 a month, first 3 months free).

There's also an annoying (but, these days, par-for-the-course) £15 charge for every extra GB you go over the limit which makes it well worth paying the extra £5 for 3GB if you think you might regularly go over that limit.

Long or short contract

Virgin Media Mobile Broadband provides a free USB modem using the same technology as T-Mobile's excellent T-Mobile Modem Stick when you take an 18-month contract.

Without the contract you'll pay £24.99 for the modem but you'll have more flexibility: after the first two months you'll be on a one-month rolling contract and free to cancel at any time.

It's also worth noting that VoIP services are not available with this service. For the same mobile broadband plus access to VoIP go for T-mobile mobile broadband Extra.

Virgin do get a thumbs up from us, though, for their 28 day Customer Satisfaction Guarantee.

If you're not happy, this will give you a full refund (although minus any data access you've bought) and they'll send you prepaid packaging to post the modem back.

How fast is Virgin Media Mobile Broadband?

You can theoretically receive speeds of up to 4.5Mbps, but realistically you probably won't get much faster than 2Mbps when 'out in the field', so to speak.

That said, Virgin Media have done themselves a big favour by piggybacking on the rump of T-Mobile, as tests reveal T-Mobile - and thus Virgin Media Mobile Broadband - offer the fastest and most reliable mobile broadband speeds.
