WHAT do you get when you cross snail mail with email? Post Office Broadband Standard, of course.
But don’t worry; snail mail speed has little influence on Post Office Broadband. This package offers all the relevant perks of any broadband contender with the only possible downside being slightly higher cost.
Free modem
Post Office Broadband Standard gives you up to 8Mbps speed and a 5GB monthly download limit plus a free modem and 50MB of web space - perfect for peddling yourself or your opinions to the world.
Post Office Broadband Standard also boasts a simple ‘plug and go’ setup, minus the setup fees, and is offered on a standard 12 month contract.
Though the service itself is priced slightly higher than the super popular Tiscali's Option 1, Post Office Broadband Standard slots nicely in the middle compared to BT Total Broadband’s equivalent entry level service.
Relatively good value
Arguably, better broadband deals can be had elsewhere, especially if you are bundling services such as telephone with your broadband, a la Tiscali Option 1 with telephone or Virgin Media's 3 for £30 (which includes broadband, home phone and TV) but Post Office Broadband Standard service is still relatively good value.
Keep in mind though that the advertised price is for monthly Direct Debit payments only. If you pay by other methods monthly, the price is prodded up by a quid.
Home phone bundle option
If you like the idea of bundling your services, you could take advantage of the Post Office Broadband and HomePhone package for an extra £6 a month. Though this may seem pricier than Tiscali’s Option 1 with telephone service, Post Office Broadband Standard and HomePhone, setup is free, compared to Tiscali which charges £30.
Post Office Broadband Standard with HomePhone gives you free evening and weekend calls (up to 60 minutes) and this is sans any messy contract commitment on the telephone service.
Plus, Post Office HomePhone allows you to call other Post Office telephone customers anytime for free. So, if you can recruit a few longwinded friends to join you, the savings here could more than make up for any extra monthly cost.
But even if your friends and family seem reluctant to leave their own telephone service providers, you can still enjoy 10% savings to your top 10 most called telephone numbers.
5GB download limit
If you find that the sticking point of this deal comes by way of the monthly download limit (5GB), it might be better to sign up for Post Office Broadband Extra.
This service gives you unlimited monthly downloads (subject to fair usage policies) at the same 8Mbps for just a fiver per month more. That is a £4 saving per month compared to BT Total Broadband's unlimited service. However, it is currently higher than Tiscali's Option 2.
Ultimately Post Office Standard is a solid middle of the road deal in terms of pricing. It gives you all the benefits you’d expect of a capped broadband service and broadband always trumps snail mail!
