Post Office Standard Broadband (& Phone Bundle)Independent review with up to date prices, details and special offers for this package...
Post Office broadband review: StandardWHAT do you get when you cross snail mail with email? Post Office Broadband Standard, of course. Don't worry though, snail mail speed has little influence on Post Office Broadband. This package offers all the usual perks of any standard broadband contender. The only downside is a slightly higher cost. 5GB download allowance Post Office Broadband Standard gives you up to 8Mbps speed, plus a free modem and 50MB of web space - perfect for peddling yourself or your opinions to the world. Post Office Broadband Standard also boasts a simple 'plug and go' setup, minus the setup fees, and is offered on a standard 12 month contract. However, the service itself is priced higher than many broadband deals especially considering the tiny 5GB a month download limit. 5GB will be fine if you're just looking for a basic broadband deal for browsing but if you start watching a few hours of high-quality video a week you run the risk of going over so bear in mind that - for example - Plusnet Value broadband and TalkTalk Essentials offer more for less. However, Post Office Broadband Standard is still nicely in the middle of the road compared to BT Total Broadband option one, their equivalent entry-level service. Keep in mind though that the advertised price is for monthly Direct Debit payments only. If you pay by other methods monthly, the price is prodded up by a quid. Throw in a home phone too If you like the idea of bundling your services, you could do worse than taking advantage of the Post Office Broadband and HomePhone package too. This is well worth it because when you switch your home phone over to the Post Office you'll also knock £7 a month off the price. So, even though Post Office line rental is more than BT's (£12) you'll still save £78.48 overall by switching. Post Office Broadband Standard with HomePhone gives you free evening and weekend calls (up to 60 minutes) and this is sans any messy contract commitment on the telephone service. We also like that Post Office HomePhone allows you to call other Post Office telephone customers anytime for free. So, if you can recruit a few longwinded friends to join you, the savings here could more than make up for any extra monthly cost. Even if your friends and family seem reluctant to leave their own telephone service providers, you can still enjoy 10% savings to your top 10 most called telephone numbers. Usage allowance of 5GB per month If you find that the sticking point of this deal comes by way of the monthly download limit (5GB), it might be better to sign up for Post Office Broadband Extra. 5GB is really only suitable if you only browse webpages and use email (no watching TV online etc). Post Office broadband Extra gives you unlimited monthly downloads (subject to fair usage policies) at the same 8Mbps for just a fiver per month more. That's a £4 saving per month compared to BT Total Broadband's unlimited service. It's also worth noting that you up you can pay less for more (but not unlimited) usage elsewhere. For example, Plusnet Value broadband is just £5.99 a month for 10GB a month and their line rental is less than BT's too. All in All Ultimately, as other broadband providers lower their prices, Post Office Standard is becoming an increasingly expensive option. We've also been saddened to hear that Post Office Standard's customer services seem to be falling way below standard of late. All in all, although Post Office broadband Standard manages to trump snail mail we'd recommend that you compare broadband & phone deals in your area to check whether a better service is available to you.
