Virgin Media Broadband L (& Phone)Independent review with up to date prices, details and special offers for this package...
Virgin Media broadband review: Broadband L & PhoneBranson's brand already adorns just about every product you can think of from planes to lingerie so it probably won't come as a surprise that Virgin Media are now the most popular broadband provider in UK. L broadband is Virgin's smallest package, though with up to 10 Mb speeds and unlimited downloads, it upstages most other entry-level broadband deals. You don't need a phone line... but you can still get one Virgin Media are the only major provider of cable broadband in the UK so if you want your internet without the extra expense of a landline they're the obvious choice. If you do want to keep your home phone we'd recommend switching your current service to Virgin Media's when you sign up to save on The line rental is a touch more expensive than BT's - £11.99 - but Virgin Media will knock much more than that off your broadband, reducing the price to just £5 a month for the first three months and £12.50 thereafter. If you use your home phone often there are a number of options - phone L with inclusive evening and weekend calls will add £3.45 to your monthly price and phone XL with inclusive anytime calls will be an extra However, if you only use your landline occasionally we'd plump for phone M. M is Virgin Media's basic home phone deal so it won't cost you anything extra for inclusive weekend calls to UK landlines and (even better) you'll be able to take advantage of our exclusive 'three months free' offer. Three Months Free from Choose When you sign up to Virgin Media broadband L and phone M through the link at the bottom of this page you'll get an extra free month of broadband completely free and a £40 credit on your first bill (so effectively you're getting 6.2 months free). We are good to you, aren't we? Free Wireless and Free Installation A nice extra is the free wireless modem you'll get with your service, perfect for connecting multiple computers. For a limited time you can also get your service installed for free when you sign up online, saving you £30. Unlimited Downloads Unlimited downloads mean that you won't need to watch your usage allowance with Virgin Media broadband L. However, 'unlimited' does come with a caveat. Like most other large broadband providers, Virgin Media operates a 'fair use' policy which throttles (severely slows down) the connection of the top 3% of downloaders. It won't affect the vast majority of users but if you're a games addict or big on peer to peer it is worth keeping in mind. 'Up to' 10Mb Speeds Another thing worth keeping in mind is the L package's promise of up to 10 Mb speeds. 'Up to' speeds are theoretical maximum speeds and whether you will be able to receive them will depend on the services in your area, how far you are from the exchange and even your computer. Having cable broadband does increase your chances of having a fast broadband service but it's not a guarantee: most of the users that we've spoken to get 5 - 8Mb speeds. Final Word To sum up, Virgin Media's broadband is a unique product - the only broadband you can get without a phone line - at a fair price.
