Virgin Media broadband review: Broadband XXL + Phone

THE UK's fastest broadband package comes with completely unlimited downloads and a top of the range wireless router... but can you get it? Use the availability checker to the right to find out.

The Concorde of Broadband

Ok so it's pushing it a bit to say that broadband XXL is supersonic but it definitely fits in with Virgin's planes, trains and hot air balloons. This is broadband's Concorde: exclusive and really, really fast.

At 50Mbs Virgin Media's XXL package is the fastest broadband in the UK.

That's extra speed is unbeatable whether you're streaming video, downloading and playing games or just browsing. Virgin have boasted even that the service will allow you to download a full 15GB HD film in just 45 minutes.

The burning question, though: is it achievable?

Virgin certainly seem be taking their speeds seriously and have teamed up with an independent broadband speed-checker to monitor their success. That 12 month trial was launched in July so we look forward to the results.

Like all broadband speeds, however, 50Mb is an 'up to' amount which is dependent on a number of factors. Most important is your area, though, so check your availability by putting your postcode into one of our search engines or when you go to sign up on Virgin's site.

With so many factors it's still hard to be sure of the speeds you'll get but shortening the odds considerably is the top-of-the-range router included in the package.

Free Wireless Router

Virgin Media's wireless 'N' router is included for free.

The 'N' router offers better coverage than your run of the mill modem and since poor wireless connection (along with many other factors) can slow down your connection that's indispensable.

Security encryption is also included to stop those pesky 50Mb broadband thieves.

You will also get a free wireless 'N' router adaptor - which plugs into your USB - in case your existing wireless card doesn't work with the router.

The actual 50Mb broadband has recently taken a serious price dive from a pricey £50 to just £28 a month with a Virgin phone line. Virgin line rental is cheaper that BT's incidentally, at just £11.

Without a phone line broadband XXL is a slightly more pricey £38.

Unlimited Downloads

As you would expect with such face-aching speeds unlimited downloads are included.

Unlike other Virgin Media packages, though, there is no acceptable use policy applies which will throttle you ( in terms of speed, not literally) if you're in the top 5% of downloaders so use as unacceptably as you like.

More Extras

Unlike other Virgin Media broadband deals, which have free installation when you sign up online, XXL requires a £20 activation fee. Luckily, however, there are some extras to ease the pain.

Since only Martin Lewis is cheaper than us we were also excited to see that PC Guard Total Anti-Virus (which offers fairly comprehensive protection including a firewall), unlimited amount of online storage to back up all your files and 100 free photo prints every month are included absolutely free.

All in all, Virgin Media XXL broadband offers unbeatable speeds with great phone and TV packages to match.

"I get all three of my services through VM, BB, TV and Phone with their VIP package. As regards their BB I always get over 18mb whatever time of day and it very rare I ever lose my connection, twice in one year each time for less than half hour. The only real drawback with VM is the Indian CS, some people terribly hard to understand, and they all read answers off a clipboard, best wait to business hours. Mind you it is improving, overall I'd give them 8/10."

George from Dundee writes... 27/11/2008

"I have recently moved house and needed to phone Virgin Media several times but never once had to speak to an Indian call center. Although i have with BT. Service with VM is decent enough and there cables broadband is excellent. Have had to move to ADSL with them but have not tried it yet so can't comment on quality."

Martin from London writes... 12/10/2007

"Signed up for Virgin Media XL Broadband 20Mb. I don't even get 1Mb most times, usually lower. The customer service is extremely poor and they are all based in India. There is no email based support, only 25p/min tech number."

Gareth Snow from Worthing writes... 03/10/2007

"We recently had broadband, telephone and also TV installed from Virgin Media and they were excellent. Really good value for money. Also we have Virgin Media's V+ service which is superb!"

S.J. from Manchester writes... 08/09/2007

"When Virgin Media was still Telewest it was great. Now the XL package is £37/month, with fair use policy introduced, the speeds are not consistent and the upload speed is ridiculous for todays isp's. The once free tech help is now 25p/min with 10p connection charge (to India!!). If I had a BT line I would try another broadband provider."

Jason Hines from Epsom writes... 12/08/2007

"So far so very good. I signed up to the VirginMedia 3 for £30 bundle in April and so far have been amazed. I had heard bad stories but took the risk as they offer a moneyback guarantee. Thankfully I never had to use it. I still find it amazing that I get all this for £30. Highly recommended."

Hazel Wykes from Birmingham writes... 11/08/2007

"We thought we'd give Virgin Media a try just to see how it compared but were so dissatified with it, that we changed back to BT. We are now on BT Total Broadband Option 3. Its top class, everything about it is excellent. It beats Virgin Media all round."
